RARE Vintage WWI Reproduction: CARILLON by Captain W. Longstaff (11326)

  • $295.00

Carillon painted 1932 by Captain Will Longstaff: New Zealand soldiers in Belgium hear the bells of their homeland in WWI.
Reproduction print signed in pencil lower right by W. Longstaff.

Will Longstaff is best known for his large, popular, allegorical paintings of ghostly fallen soldiers on battlefields, such as 'Menin Gate at Midnight' ('Ghosts of Menin Gate') 1927, and the 'Immortal Shrine' ('Eternal Silence'). 'Carillon', a third allegorical picture, painted in 1934, depicting New Zealand war dead on the Belgian coast, is displayed in the National Art Gallery, Wellington. We believe this to be a lithograph.

Inscribed: 'Carillon from the original presented the People of New Zealand by Lord Wakefield of Hythe. This reproduction was also presented to be sold in aid of New Zealand War Charities. Printed by Gilbert Whitehead and Co. Ltd. Printers, New Eltham, London, S.E.9.' Condition'

Vintage Pinned Frame needs replacing. Glass is intact but the frame itself has dents and lots of marks. The thin rope used to hang this picture has snapped at the back. There is a lot of dirt underneath the glass itself. There are some watermarks around the end of the picture.

The painting colours are still lovely and bright! This would look incredible re-framed!
