The stunning translucent "rice grains” is a design feature that allows light to pass through the porcelain china plates, bowls and cups. Here's some information about the translucent rice pattern created in the porcelain clay: "Rice Grain" is the name of a technique rather than the actual use of rice grains.
Some people think the rice pattern is made by pressing rice kernels into the damp clay, it is not…However, the correct design is where the wet clay is formed into a simple cup or plate on the potter’s wheel and allowed to dry for several hours or even for a day. It's then carefully scraped with a special pottery knife which conforms to the shape of the pottery being made. Then a skilled craftsman hand cuts the kernel-shaped holes using a small flexible steel cutting tool with a double-edged blade on the unfired porcelain clay rough. The formed clay piece is then dipped, or painted with up to thirty coats of translucent clear glaze until all the holes are filled in.
